Nestled along the northwest edge of Old Tampa Bay in Pinellas County, Safety Harbor enjoys a unique place in history books and hearts of its citizens. First seen by Europeans when, in 1528, the Spaniard Navarez and his men landed along the shores of what the local Timucua Indians called Tocobaga, Safety Harbor is the home of historic Espiritu Santo Springs. Named by Hernando DeSoto in 1539, these natural springs were used for centuries by Native Americans for their legendary curative powers. The world-famous Safety Harbor Resort and Spa continues to attract health-conscious visitors to the area. Count Odet Philippe homesteaded Safety Harbor in 1823 on the site now known as Phillippe Park. He is credited with introducing grapefruit to Florida.
Primarily residential with a population of approximately 17,000, Safety Harbor has maintained the character of a family-oriented community while preserving its environmentally sensitive lands and revitalizing its historic Central Business District.
Safety Harbor features easy access to the region's medical, cultural, recreational, shopping, religious, business and transportation facilities. These include Tampa International Airport, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Busch Gardens, Raymond James Stadium, Tropicana Field, the Sun Dome and beautiful beaches of the Florida Suncoast.
Safety Harbor is one of 24 cities in Pinellas County that, with a population of almost one million residents, is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Safety Harbor's low density gives it an oasis-like quality in contrast to the high population density of the county in general.
